The Cost of Using a Gmail Account

A free Gmail account can cost you a lot more than you think. It’s very easy to sign up for a free Gmail account. And best of all, it’s free. But have you ever stopped to think about the cost of using a Gmail account. If you already have your own domain name, ie: mycompany.com, you can use that to switch to a more professional email account. Here are 4 reasons you should make the change today.

Branding

Make a great first impression with your email address. With the return to in person or hybrid meetings, it’s a great time to get a new set of business cards printed. Having an impressive business card will help you get noticed. It’s important that the information on the card represents your business. Just like you would not put your employee’s personal cell phone, you would not want to put a Gmail email account it. For example, instead of  spark94@gmail.com, you would want to use sarah.park@yourco.com.

Reliability

We expect emails to always reach our mailbox. However, sometime they don’t and something goes wrong. We recently had a client lose several critical emails from the city and medical offices because Gmail did not deliver the emails. Unfortunately, with Gmail , there is no phone number or support department to contact for help. Luckily for this client, we quickly setup her email on Micrsoft 365 using her domain name; she was able to receive her important emails from the city and the medical office.

Productivity

The free Gmail accounts often run into some issues when you are at your busiest. For example, trying to use Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail with your Gmail account works well when you first start out. However, as you become busier and have more emails in your account, Gmail will sometimes stop updating the email in Outlook or Apple Mail. You will then have to do a resets to your account settings to make it work again. This is a temporary fix as the issue will come back. Google knows about the issue, but they prefer that you to use their web browser for email. This is a frustrating situation that slows down your work and limits your options.

Growth

As your grow your business, you will need to add staff. With the free Gmail accounts, you can add another free Gmail account. However, if that staff member leaves or is fired, they can take that email address with them. Worse, they can take the email and contacts with them. This can be a very expensive and awkward situation, especially if that ex-employee leaves to work at a competitor.
